Match Report:
Chosen Hill FP 25 Old Bristolians 21
Chosen got their Western Counties North campaign off to a good start with a four try bonus point victory over visiting Old Bristolians, but it was not until the final five minutes that they secured victory.
Playing down the Brookfield Road slope it was Bristolians who opened the scoring after five minutes with a simple penalty goal after a Chosen forward had been caught offside. Minutes later Chosen number ten Mike King had the opportunity to level the scores but his penalty goal attempt drifted just wide.
However ten minutes later King had a second chance and this time he made no mistake as he slotted the ball between the uprights to make it three points all.
A second penalty goal from Bristolians put them back in front and they extended their lead further with a fine unconverted try in the corner after a classic miss-move from their backs.
Eight points down, Chosen needed to respond quickly and they did so in fine form. Full back Tom Darby fielded a high ball just inside his own half and made twenty five metres before slipping the ball to his supporting forwards who inter passed until Darby’s older brother Mike took the final pass and bulldozed over in the corner for Chosen’s first try. King missed the conversion but Chosen were right back in the match and after thirty minutes Chosen centre Ross Creed put them into a 13-11 half time lead with a fine unconverted try.
Fifteen minutes into the second half Bristolians re-took the lead with a penalty try and conversion, awarded after Chosen’s pack, who were under pressure at the time, were deemed to have collapsed a scrum five meters out. A penalty goal five minutes later took the visitors into a 21-13 lead but Chosen were in a determined mood and a fine try from winger Justin Andrews converted by King reduced the deficit to just one point.
With five minutes to go Chosen secured their fourth and bonus point try as skipper and centre Josh Pettifer crossed wide out. King just missed the conversion but it mattered not as the home defence held firm to see the match out.
Next Saturday Chosen are at home again when they entertain Stothert & Pitt from Bath, a side they have never played against before in their entire 44 year history.
