New look side produce bonus point victory!

In a match in which the lead changed hands six times a new look Chosen side produced a cracking display of fifteen man rugby, running in four tries for a bonus point victory that put them into 6th place in Western Counties North.
Chosen’s long term commitment to Junior Rugby is continuing to reap dividends as enthusiastic and skilful young players make the transition to the senior sides and the starting fifteen for this match included Zack Taylor and Tom Knight (17), Matt Burrows (18) and Joe Moore (19), all of whom made significant contributions to the result with second row Taylor securing good line out ball, scrum half Knight constantly probing the visitors defence, flanker Moore running in two tries and winger Burrows a constant threat with the ball in hand.
Bristolians had first use of the Brookfield Road slope and opened the scoring after just four minutes with a penalty goal but Chosen responded immediately from the re-start as forwards and backs combined to race almost the length of the pitch and send Joe Moore in for a try near the posts. Outside half Andy King converted for a four point lead.
Bristolians retook the lead after sixteen minutes with an unconverted try, but again Chosen struck back almost immediately as another long range attack ended with Moore going over for his second try. King was off target with the conversion but his side led 12-8.
A converted try on the half hour gave the visitors a 15-12 lead and again the Chosen response was to go straight back on the attack as centre Scott Claridge, back after a season with Matson, ran in the first of his two tries with King adding the extras for a 19-15 half-time lead.
Now with advantage of the slope, Chosen’s Claridge raced in for his second try right at the start of the half but King was unable to convert.
On fifty minutes Chosen’s veteran number eight Ian Riddle was yellow carded and worst was to follow for the home team as, with Riddle still in the bin, skipper Tom Gyde joined him on the touchline, but the thirteen men managed to hold out and deny the visitors any score.
A penalty goal for Bristolians after sixty three minutes took the score to 24-18 but eight minutes later King landed a similar goal to restore the nine point lead and deny the visitors a losing bonus point.
In injury time Bristolians had one last chance to narrow the gap and gain a bonus point but their penalty goal attempt went wide and Chosen came away with a fully deserved victory.
Next week Chosen continue their league action as they travel to Fromehall Park for a match against Stroud.
