With first use of the wind and the Brookfield Road slope, Brixham got off to the perfect start when Chosen were penalised from the kick-off and outside half Ben Lovell landed a well struck penalty goal to put his side three points up. Five minutes later it looked as though they would go further ahead when they kicked another penalty into the corner and tried to drive the resulting lineout over the line but they infringed and the opportunity was lost.
With both teams looking to use their speedy wingers the match developed into an end to end affair but strong defending was the order of the day and half time arrived with the visitors clinging onto their narrow three point lead.
With the elements now in their favour, Chosen started the second half strongly and within four minutes they drew level when skipper Andy King landed a penalty goal after some Brixham indiscipline at a maul thirty metres out.
On fifty five minutes the visitors lost flanker Brian Crichton to the sin-bin but King missed the resultant penalty goal attempt, only to be given another opportunity a minute later when a Brixham forward was caught offside at a ruck. This time King made no mistake as he eased his side into a three point lead.
Chosen now sensed victory and to a man they upped their defensive efforts as Brixham looked to break back.
King landed penalty goal number three on sixty five minutes but five minutes later they lost centre Max Hough to the sin bin for a late tackle and Lovell narrowed the deficit to just three points with his second penalty goal that set up an all action final ten minutes.
Despite being down to fourteen men, Chosen drove play into the visitor’s half and as tensions increased Brixham had their hooker sent to the sin bin. Chosen elected for a scrum and drove play towards the Brixham line only for the scrum to collapse. A couple of re-sets of the scrum five metres out followed before, to the delight of the home supporters, Chosen number eight Ian Riddel finally picked up from the back and forced his way over for a try that King converted to seal a great victory.
With players returning from holidays, and injury Chosen continue to improve week on week and this victory will have given their confidence another huge boost ahead of the consecutive away matches to come against Camborne and Clevedon.
