Chosen Hill’s recent good form counted for nothing after a display littered with uncharacteristic errors saw them soundly beaten by bogey side Clevedon.
Other than a fairly strong cross wind, the conditions at Southey Road were fine as Chosen looked to bounce back from last weeks narrow defeat away at Camborne but it was the home side who opened the scoring as Chosen were penalised at the first scrum allowing full back Taylor to land the penalty goal.
Chosen then got into their stride and within a minute had drawn level with a penalty goal from skipper Andy King. Further penalties from King after eight and twelve minutes, the later being a reversed penalty after back chat from a Clevedon forward, saw Chosen edge into a six point lead but from then on nothing seemed to go right for the Churchdown based side.
Clevedon lost hooker Kemp to the sin bin on twenty minutes but Chosen were unable to capitalise on their extra man advantage and before Kemp returned his side went into the lead with a second Taylor penalty goal and a try from flanker Biggins converted by Taylor.
On thirty seven minutes it was Chosen’s turn to loose a man to the sin bin as number eight Ian Riddel received his marching orders, and with their confidence visibly growing Clevedon camped on the Chosen line and ended the half 18-9 up after an unconverted try in the corner from winger Cates.
A penalty goal from Taylor after fifty five minutes increased the home lead and five minutes later they effectively sealed victory when their forwards drove over the line for an unconverted try for a 26 – 9 lead.
On the stroke of full time Clevedon got their fourth and bonus point try in the corner to leave Chosen to reflect on a disappointing performance that had seen a bright start turn into a dismal finish.
Next week Chosen have the luxury of a home match with a 2.30pm kick-off when they entertain Devon side Cullompton.
As well as being their Vice Presidents and Sponsors Day, the Cullompton match will also be held as a tribute to former player and third team captain Chris Ball who, together with a work colleague, tragically lost his life in a car accident on the outskirts of Evesham earlier this year.
