Fine weather and a good sized crowd of spectators set the scene for a match in which the visitors got off at a remarkable start, running in three unanswered tries in the opening thirteen minutes.
From the kick-off a Chosen forward knocked the ball on, Cullompton won the resulting scrum and kept possession through a number of phases before releasing full back Marcus Busch who, after several missed tackles, crossed for the opening try converted by outside half Adam Pearce. Before they had a chance to put together a reasonable passage of play, another Chosen mistake, this time at the back of a scrum twenty five metres out, allowed Pearce to scoop up the loose ball and cross unopposed near the posts, his conversion meant that Chosen had conceded fourteen points in just ten minutes and worse was still to come when three minutes later Cullompton centre Jemba Bull ran a great line from inside his own twenty two and sprinted a full sixty metres to send winger Lee Powell over in the corner for an unconverted try.
Chosen finally managed to get their act together and after twenty minutes they were rewarded with their opening score when scrum half John Wand followed up his own box kick to collect the ball and cross wide out. Centre Andy King missed the conversion but eight minutes later he landed a huge penalty goal from the half way line to claw back another three points. King then had penalty opportunities after thirty five and thirty eight minutes but both kicks went wide of the posts and half time arrived with the visitors from Devon leading by 18-9.
Chosen started the second half well and camped inside the visitor’s twenty two with their forwards trying to find a way through the tight Cullompton defence and when they won a penalty just five metres out near the touch line, they opted to go for the lineout rather than the scrum but then lost the ball on their own throw in and the opportunity was lost.
On fifty minutes King missed a penalty goal attempt but two minutes later he was successful with another attempt that narrowed the Cullompton lead to just eight points. Pearce then missed a fairly simple penalty attempt for Cullompton but on sixty five minutes his side crossed for their bonus point try, and three minutes later they went over again with Pearce adding the conversion for a match winning 31-11 lead.
Chosen knew that the game and any chance of a losing bonus point had slipped away from them but continued to look for a score and they were finally rewarded for their efforts three minutes from full time when second row Marc Riddel barged over from close range for a try converted by King.
Next week Chosen are off to Devon for a match against Ivybridge.
