Back in early December, Chosen had run in six tries and recorded a 40 – 7 victory over Avon at Brookfield Road, but there was to be no repeat today as the home side, obviously used to playing on a quagmire of a pitch, adapted more quickly to the almost unplayable conditions.
Chosen had made eight changes to the side that had won last weekend against Old Bristolians and whist they tried to settle into some sort of rhythm Avon used their driving maul to cross for two early converted tries.
With the rain continuing to fall to soften up the mud even further, both sides were making handling errors with Chosen unfortunately making the most, and after thirty minutes it was becoming increasingly difficult for the referee to distinguish between the mud covered players from either team.
A penalty goal just before half time gave Avon a comfortable seventeen point interval lead.
Chosen made a couple of changes in the second half and tightened up their all round play as they finally began to adapt to the conditions but despite launching numerous promising attacks they were unable to break down the stubborn home defence and the second half ended scoreless.
Results elsewhere meant that Chosen maintained their fifth place in the league and next weekend they have the luxury of a home match as they face 6th placed Cirencester in their last scheduled fixture of the season.
