With heavy rain and strong winds predicted, Chosen Hill were lucky to get this match under way in relatively kind conditions and with first use of the slope they took the lead after ten minutes with an Andy King penalty goal.
Avonmouth responded after twenty five minutes with a well worked unconverted try from a penalty move that saw their forwards drive a rolling maul over the line near the corner for flanker Neil Holder to touch down.
As half time approached and the weather began to worsen Chosen re-took the lead when their forwards used the pick and drive to good effect to slowly move towards the visitors line and pack leader Nick Selway eventually made the final move, barging his way over for a try from a metre out. King added the conversion for a ten points to five interval lead.
As the second half started heavy rain began to fall and with Avonmouth now having the elements in their favour they immediately went on the attack, forcing Chosen into conceding a penalty for off side that winger Andy Russell converted to narrow the gap to just two points.
On fifty minutes Chosen lost winger Scott Claridge to the sin bin for persistent infringing at the ruck and five minutes later Avonmouth took the lead when the home side were penalised for a technical offence and Russell landed the resulting penalty goal.
As conditions worsened the slippery ball made for difficult handling with both sides suffering from dropped passes or other errors and the match drifted into a mid-field struggle that neither side was able to dominate. Chosen had a couple of late chances to snatch victory after the visitors lost their openside flanker to the sin-bin but the driving rain made kicking conditions extremely difficult and King had to turn down goal kicks that would normally have been within his range, instead opting for the safety of shorter range touch kicks that his side were unable to convert into points.
Next Saturday Chosen are again at home when they entertain fellow league newcomers Sidmouth.
