North Glos Combination Senior Cup 1st Round
A bitterly cold night, strong cross winds and a muddy pitch all combined to restrict any real open attacking play and it was Chosen’s forward strength that eventually won them the match with two close range tries.
Old Cents opened the scoring after four minutes with a Craig Anderson penalty goal and five minutes later he made it 6 – 0 with a second penalty goal. Chosen responded with an opening penalty goal from Andy King after twelve minutes and five minutes later they took the lead when prop Nick Selway crashed over from short range. King’s conversion attempt went wide and half time arrived with the visitors clinging onto their narrow lead.
Old Cents went back in front on fifty five minutes with a third penalty goal, but this time it was from Liam Hemming who had taken over the kicking duties from Anderson.
Chosen’s forwards were now on top in the set piece scrums and it was not long before King put his side back in front with a penalty goal after scum half John Wand had been tripped. With ten minutes remaining King landed another penalty goal and five minutes later the visitors sealed victory when number eight Marc Riddel touched down after his fellow forwards had driven a five metre scrum over the line. King added the conversion to seal victory and book a quarter final place at home against Gloucester Old Boys.
