Chosen's opening home league fixture brings them a four try bonus point victory against visiting Walcot

After last week’s disappointing defeat at Wadebridge, Chosen Hill got their season back on track and moved up to seventh place in the league table with a bonus point victory over visiting Walcot.
Walcot had first use of the slope and opened brightly but Chosen’s defence held firm until, after five minutes, they conceded a penalty forty metres out. With a following wind, Walcot’s outside half Chris Spreadbury had no difficulty in opening the scoring for the visitors.
Chosen were playing with confidence and flair and they bounced back five minutes later when outside half Jon Coles produced a scintillating break from thirty metres out that ended with second row Dean Barnard taking the pass and crashing over for their opening try. Skipper and centre Andy King converted for a four point lead.
Walcot regained the lead after fifteen minutes when speedy winger David Ayres received an inch perfect long pass forty metres out and outstripped the Chosen defence for an unconverted try in the corner.
With first half injury time being played Chosen retook the lead when the visitors were caught going over the top at a ruck and King landed the resultant penalty goal for a two point interval lead.
With the advantage of the slope and wind now in their favour, Chosen opened the second half strongly and good interpassing between forwards and backs saw centre Max Hough finish off a flowing move with a try near the posts. King converted for a seventeen points to eight lead.
More was to come from Chosen as their forwards, with number eight Marc Riddel in fine form, drove a maul over the line and veteran prop Jonny Mullis touched down for try number three.
Sensing that a bonus point might be possible, Chosen shunned several kickable penalty goal attempts to go for position and with forty one minutes of the second half played, their tactics came up trumps as King latched onto a fine pass from Coles and ran in under the posts for the bonus point forth try which he duly converted.
For Chosen this was a fine all round team performance with youngsters Coles and debutant winger Eddie Higgs catching the eye in the back division whilst flanker Ryan Hawkins stood out in a committed display from all ten forwards used.
Next week, Chosen travel to old rivals Avonmouth Old Boys for another league match.
