A convincing seven try victory over visitors Avon sent Chosen Hill to the top of Western Counties North
Chosen had first use of the Brookfield Road slope and the match was only seven minutes old when they got their first points on the board. Having had no possession at all since the kick-off, they turned the ball over near the halfway line and quickly shipped it out to winger Jamie Gamble who touched down in the corner. Andy King, back at number ten after last week’s outing at centre, was just off target with the conversion attempt.
Avon continued to dominate possession but they could find no way through a resolute Chosen defence and after fifteen minutes, Chosen won the ball from a lineout and full-back Scott Claridge joined the line at pace and cut through the visitors defence to cross near the posts with King adding the extras.
With half time approaching Chosen scored try number three when hooker Leigh Dangerfield finished off another flowing move, crossing wide out but King was unable to convert leaving the half time score at 17-0.
Five minutes into the second half Chosen centre Tom Darby raced in for the bonus point try with King converting and just three minutes later Dangerfield scored his second try after yet another scintillating move involving most of the team.
On sixty minutes Avon, who still had the majority of possession, finally scored with a try in the corner but with the conversion missed it proved to be their only points of the match and Chosen scored again after seventy minutes with Darby repeating his earlier impressive running with a second try near the posts which King converted.
Number eight Ian Riddel finished off the scoring for Chosen after a barging run saw him crash over for try number seven with King adding the conversion.
This was another impressive performance from Chosen who in reality probably had no more than 35% possession throughout the match but with young scrum-half and man of the match Tom Knight in wonderful form and combining well with number ten King, the home side always looked dangerous on the attack and indeed they could have scored more tries but for last minute dropped or forward passes.
The win, their fifth out of six league matches put Chosen level on the number of victories with Keynsham, Avonmouth Old Boys, Chew Valley and Cheltenham, but their haul of six bonus points means that they top the table by two points over second placed Keynsham.
