Playing down the slope,Penryn opened the scoring after just three minutes with a penalty goal from scrum-half Taron Peacock but for the next twenty minutes Chosen weathered the Penryn storm to prevent any further score. Then the injury bug, that has plagued their season, struck again as skipper and scrum half John Wand limped off with a knee injury. With no recognised scrum-half cover on the bench, the home side had to completely rearrange their back division with outside half Matt Elston taking over at number nine.
Penryn took full advantage of the situation and whilst the Chosen backs were still sorting out the changes Penryn took a quick tap penalty and ran in an unconverted try from centre Lewis Vaige. Chosen began to settle and their first chance of points came on the thirty minute mark but Mark Yemm’s penalty goal attempt hit the upright and bounced to safety.
A second try from the visitors increased their lead and when Chosen flanker Ian Riddel was sent to the sin bin Penryn quickly ran in try number three concerted by Peacock. On the stroke of half time Penryn were awarded a penalty try after some illegal work at a five metre scrum. The conversion gave them a thirty point interval lead.
The second half started as the first had finished with the visitors taking advantage of some very loose Chosen defence to run in two more tries , one of which was converted to give them an unassailable forty two point lead.
Staring a huge defeat in the face, Chosen showed great spirit to respond in the way that they did. First winger Jamie Gamble ran in an unconverted try and then five minutes later, with the visitors down to fourteen men after a sin binning, opposite winger Marcus Ballard ran in unconverted try number two.
Chosen’s third try was a penalty try duly converted by Yemm and they secured a bonus point on the stroke of full time with try number four from hooker Chris Dallard.
Next week, Chosen travel down the M5 for their return match against Clevedon.
