The bad weather affecting the whole of the South West meant that this match was played on a very wet and muddy pitch with the go ahead only confirmed by both captains and the referee sixty minutes before kick off.
Chosen won the toss and elected to play into the face of a howling wind and it was the home side who opened the scoring after five minutes with a converted try near the posts.
Worst was to follow for the Churchdown side as they conceeded further tries after twenty and thirty minutes but with half time approaching they finally got a score on the board. Following a period of sustained forward pressure Chosen prop Nick Selway was driven to within inches of the line and when Paignton infringed to prevent the score the referee awarded a penalty try and skipper Andy King converted to give his side hope for the second half.
With the wind, which by this time had dropped to a gentle breeze, now in their favour Chosen went on the attack right at the start of the second half but wrong options and a highly effective Paignton blanket defence kept them at bay until mid way through the half when winger Scott Claridge crossed for an unconverted try after he followed up a King chip into the corner.
Paington wrapped up victory with a further try late on and Chosen were left to reflect on missed opportunities and wrong options that ended up costing them dear.
Next Sturday sees Chosen entertain Avonmouth Old Boys in a replay of their earlier league match that was abandoned at half time after the referee was unable to continue due to an ankle injury.
