Despite going down by 28 – 0, Chosen put in a performance of real commitment against form side Clevedon and results elsewhere meant that the Churchdown side managed to hold onto their tenth place in the league, but only on the narrowest of points difference.
Clevedon winger Johns landed penalty goals after eight and fifteen minutes to edge his side in front but Chosen were in a determined mood with their forwards doing particularly well in the set pieces. After twenty minutes they drove towards the home line where Clevedon were forced into conceding a penalty but skipper Andy King’s goal attempt drifted just wide.
The home side increased their lead after thirty minutes when they crossed for an unconverted pushover try and then Chosen lost both number eight Ian Riddel and King to the sin-bin but despite being down to thirteen men they held out and went into half time just eleven points down.
Injuries in the second half meant that Chosen lost second row Dean Barnard, scum half Dan Yeates and flanker Rich Planchant and Clevedon ran in three more tries, the second two coming late in the game when the visitors were searching for quick scores to get them back into the match.
Obviously a disappointing result for Chosen but the scoreline did not truly reflect the effort and commitment shown by their young team who next week welcome Cullompton to Brookfield Road for another league match with a 2.30pm kick off.
