Twenty points to nil down at the break, Chosen Hill staged a strong second half recovery but in the end slipped to defeat by eight points

On a warm sunny afternoon, Chosen took on Paignton in the Devon side’s first ever visit to Brookfield Road and it was the visitors, playing down the slope, who got the first points on the board after twenty minutes when winger Adam Taylor-Neads stole a loose ball at a ruck and sprinted three quarters of the length of the pitch to cross in the corner. Centre Matt Jackson just missed with his conversion attempt.
A penalty goal from Jackson ten minutes later increased the Paignton lead and soon after the visitors were thirteen points up when a Jackson penalty goal attempt hit the up right and bounced back into play and into the arms of centre Sam Nelson-Smith who touched down in the right hand corner. Jackson missed the conversion attempt.
On the stroke of half time the visitors scored their third try when several missed Chosen tackles cost them dear. Jackson converted for a twenty point interval lead.
With the slope now in their favour, Chosen got the second half off to a good start when openside Sam Atwooll finished off a flowing move with a try near the posts. Skipper Andy King converted. On sixty minutes Chosen scored again when centre Marc Riddel, who was having a fine all round game, charged over in the corner. King’s conversion attempt went just wide but five minutes later he set up a nail biting finish when he was on target with a penalty goal that cut the visitors lead to just five points.
With ten minutes left, Paignton scored again when they turned over a Chosen scrum and their pack drove over for a try converted by Jackson and they then racked up the thirty points with a Jackson penalty goal after King was sin binned for a technical offence.
Despite being down to fourteen men, Chosen continued to attack and they got their reward on the stroke of full time when a series of pick and drives ended with prop Nick Selway crashing over for a try. Outside half Matt Elston converted with the final kick of the game.
Next week Chosen make their final trip to Devon when the will be visiting Sidmouth.
