Chosen had first use of the slope and the following wind and after five minutes number ten Andy King landed a penalty goal after Old Bristolians had deliberately knocked on when defending inside their own twenty two.
A Bristolians drop goal five minutes later levelled the scores but within a minute Chosen went back into the lead when full back Scott Claridge raced in from half-way for a try converted by King, but with first half injury time being played, the visitors levelled the scores at 10 points all with a converted try.
In the first half Chosen had been under pressure in the set piece with the big Bristolians pack shunting them off their own ball on several occasions and with the slope and wind advantage in the second half, it appeared the Bristol based side would quickly establish a lead, but the turning point of the match came after just two minutes of the second half.
Chosen Hill replacement number eight Ian Riddel was sin-binned for a ruck offence inside the red zone and when the visitors opted for a five metre scrum rather than a simple penalty goal a push-over try looked inevitable but Chosen’s re-arranged front row of Dave Revell, Leigh Dangerfield and replacement Jonny Mullis held firm and after two re-sets of the scrum the visitors were penalised for feeding and the threat was over.
As the half developed, Chosen continued their remarkable turnaround at the set piece and when they won a ball against the head, replacement Mike King was on hand to finish off a flowing move with an unconverted try.
A Bristolians penalty goal narrowed the deficit to just two points after Chosen skipper Josh Pettifer was yellow carded and the visitors must have thought that they would then re-take control of the match but Chosen were playing with increased fluency and confidence and despite being down to fourteen men, a King penalty goal was quickly followed by a breakaway try from second row Dan Probin converted by King.
Minutes later King sold a wonderful dummy near the halfway line and raced in under the posts for the bonus point forth try which he then converted for a 32-13 lead.
With injury time being played Chosen landed try number five when Riddel made a powerful break from near halfway and as he was finally halted he unloaded to the supporting Claridge who charged in for his second try with King adding the conversion to ensure an emphatic victory that had looked very unlikely at half-time.
Next week Chosen are at home again when they entertain Oldfield Old Boys with a 2.30 kick-off.
