On a sunny afternoon and with the pitch in fine condition, Stothert & Pitt, whom Chosen had never played before, had first use of the Brookfield Road slope and they opened the scoring after five minutes when Chosen were penalised for handling in a ruck inside their own twenty-two.
The visitors pack were causing the Chosen eight some problems in the set piece but when in procession, Chosen’s off-loading tactics were creating opportunities and it was from one such inter-passing move which started near the halfway line that saw flanker Dan Probin take the final pass and scorch over for his side’s opening try with outside half Mike King adding the extras.
Chosen’s second try came five minutes later when full back Tom Darby fielded a high ball just inside the visitors half and sprinted forward, chipping the ball over the last line of defence and collecting it on the bounce to cross near the posts with King again converting.
A penalty goal from Stothert & Pitt on the half hour reduced the deficit to eight points and with half time approaching they ran in an unconverted try of their own to get within three points of their hosts but with injury time now being played Darby crossed for his second try and King converted and then with the final play of the half he added a penalty goal for a 24-11 interval lead.
It was the visitors who scored first in the second half with the conversion cutting the gap to six points but from then on it was all Chosen.
Just two minutes after the Stothert score Chosen second row Marc Riddel barged over for a close-quarter bonus point try converted by King and minutes later number eight Josh Bailey scored his first try for his new club after another spate of inter-passing but King missed the conversion.
Replacement flanker Ian Riddel was next to score but the conversion was missed and then on the stroke of full time Chosen scored the try of the match as forwards and backs combined well from inside their own half with Marc Riddel drawing the cover before slipping a perfectly timed and weighted pass to Bailey who raced away and crossed near the corner.
The victory saw Chosen move into third place in the table and next week they make the short journey over the hill to take on current leaders and local rivals Coney Hill.
