Having had to postpone the match last week because of the lack of a referee, Chosen Hill welcomed Avon back to Brookfield Road and young Gloucestershire referee Charlie Gayther was ready and waiting to take control of what turned out to be an interesting match.
Chosen had first use of the slope and soon went into a seven point lead when winger Ryan Rennebach crossed for a try converted by outside half Andy King.
Avon’s big pack were causing Chosen a few problems in the set piece and a slight altercation after a big shove from the visitors pack ended with Chosen prop Mike Darby being sent to the sin bin but once he was back on the pitch he made amends by powering over for Chosen’s second try. King’s conversion gave his side a fourteen point interval lead.
With the slope now in their favour, Avon quickly reduced the deficit with an unconverted try and twenty minutes later went over again for another five pointer to cut the gap to just four points.
Despite being under pressure in the forwards, Chosen produced a collective performance of real character with some heroic defence typifying their commitment and they sealed victory when Dele Ayodele, making his second appearance in the first team, stretched out for the winning try. King missed the conversion but it mattered not as his side swapped league places with Avon, with the only downside for Chosen being a back injury to King’s younger brother Mike.
Next week Chosen are at home again when they entertain third placed Bristol Harlequins.
